Water hardness is a measure of the dissolved calcium and magnesium in your water supply. As groundwater moves through soil and rock formations like limestone, it picks up these minerals along the way, which is why homes on well water are especially likely to deal with hardness issues. 

According to the U.S. Geological Survey, water is generally classified as soft at 0–60 milligrams per liter (mg/L), moderately hard at 61–120 mg/L, hard at 121–180 mg/L, and very hard above 180 mg/L.¹ Many water utilities and treatment professionals also express hardness in grains per gallon (GPG), where roughly 17 mg/L equals one grain per gallon. 

The higher your water's mineral content, the faster scale can form inside your plumbing, and the more damage it can eventually cause. 

How Hard Water Damages Your Pipes 

When mineral-rich water flows through your plumbing, calcium and magnesium gradually crystallize and cling to the interior walls of your pipes. This is commonly known as limescale, and the USGS specifically documents this type of mineral buildup forming on the inside of household water pipes over time as hardness minerals accumulate. 

The effects build slowly, but they add up: 

  • Reduced water flow and pressure — As scale narrows the interior diameter of a pipe, water has less room to move, which can leave you with weak pressure at faucets and showerheads. 

  • Increased risk of clogs — Flaking mineral deposits can break loose and collect in drains, aerators, and valves, contributing to slow drains and clogs. 

  • Corrosion and pinhole leaks — Scale doesn't just sit on the surface; uneven buildup can trap moisture and accelerate corrosion underneath, which is a common cause of pipe leaks in older plumbing. 

  • Shortened pipe lifespan — Pipes that would normally last decades may need earlier repair or replacement when scale and corrosion work together.
